Now Google Pay can be done with Aadhaar number, No debit card required

Google Pay has unveiled its latest feature-Aadhaar-based authentication for UPI activation. The integration allows users to register for Unified Payments Interface (UPI) using their Aadhaar credentials, eliminating the need for a debit card.

The introduction of the Aadhaar-based UPI onboarding flow aims to facilitate the setup of UPI IDs for a larger user base and enable digital payments. This feature is currently accessible to bank account holders of supported banks, with additional banks expected to join the platform in the near future.

the aadhaar-based onboarding feature on upi aims to expand its availability to a wider user base, furthering financial inclusion in the country.

to begin the upi onboarding process using aadhaar, users must ensure that their phone number registered with the unique identification authority of india (uidai) matches the one registered with their bank and that their bank account is linked to aadhaar. once these prerequisites are met, users can follow the steps below to complete the onboarding process:

    • in google pay, users can choose between debit card or aadhaar-based upi onboarding. if they opt for aadhaar, they need to enter the first six digits of their aadhaar number to initiate the process.

    • to authenticate the process, users will need to enter otps received from uidai and their bank.

    • the user’s bank will then finalise the process, allowing them to set their upi pin.

After the successful completion of these steps, customers can utilise the google pay app for making transactions and checking their balance. when a user enters the first six digits of their aadhaar number, it is securely transmitted to uidai via npci for validation. google pay does not retain the aadhaar number; it acts solely as a facilitator in sharing the aadhaar number with npci for validation.
