AGTF Big Action, Gangster Shot In A Close Encounter Who Was Trying To Flee

In a major action by the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) of the Punjab Police amidst the ongoing fight against organised crime launched on the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Notorious Gangster Karanjit Singh alias Jassa Happowal involved at least six murder cases including the sensational double-murder of a mother and daughter sustained bullet injuries on his both legs while unsuccessfully attempting to escape from the police custody at Peermuchalla area of the Zirakpur, said Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav here on Wednesday.

Gangster Jassa Happowal, the main shooter of an absconding foreign-based Gangster Rajesh Kumar alias Sonu Khatri and terrorist Harvinder Rinda, was arrested by the Counter Intelligence Jalandhar from the outskirts of Jalandhar on November 30. Subsequently, Jassa was brought on a production warrant in a Metro Plaza Firing case wherein he along with his two associates attempted to eliminate one person on July 21.

DGP Gaurav Yadav said that following his disclosures, a Police team from the AGTF under the overall supervision of ADGP Promod Ban was taking Jassa Happowal to the deserted built-up near Hotel Midtown in Peermuchalla, where he claimed to have concealed the Chinese pistol suspected to be used in Metro Firing Incident.

“On reaching the location, the gangster tried to escape from the police custody after pushing down a police official, which led the AGTF team to open fire to stop him from fleeing resulting in gunshot injuries,” he said, while adding that an AGTF official ASI Darshan Singh was also injured in averting his escape. Both have been taken to the nearest hospital for treatment, he added.

The DGP said that Police teams have successfully recovered one Chinese pistol along with five live cartridges. The incident is being investigated forensically and scientifically, while, forensic teams have already reached the spot, he said.

Sharing more details, AIG AGTF Sandeep Goel and DSP AGTF Bikram Singh Brar said that a fresh case FIR no. 94 dated 13.12.23 has been registered under sections 186, 353, 224 and 332 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 25 of the Arms Act at Police Station Dhakoli. Further investigations are on, he added
